Parent Supports:
Any parent dealing with a child they know or sense is experiencing difficulty is preoccupied with their concerns. Parents find themselves overwhelmed and not sure of where to turn. Those dealing with extreme behaviors often find their entire family life disrupted. Supports for parents themselves is only touched on in "No Magic Bullet" but it is a huge topic on its own.
On this page you will find links to ideas, organizations connecting parents to approaches or actual supports and books which offer suggestions to parents on where they can start to find answers themselves.
Ideas:
In "No Magic Bullet" I mentioned the progressive family policies in the Province of Quebec in Canada. I found this province is again taking the lead. On the radio program "The Sunday Edition" presented in January 2019 there was a documentary prepared by David Gutnick about the creation of a government position of Minister for Seniors and Informal Caregivers. This seems to be in response to the public's struggle with caregiving and supports they feel thy need .
Children's Health Defense is an American organization which is concerned with the chronic disease epidemic in our children.
For some unknown reason few are acknowledging and addressing why so many of our children are not well. Robert Kennedy Jr. takes a key role in this organization which approaches the issue from a legal standpoint, taking companies and government to court when it uncovers concerns. I would encourage you to listen to his impassioned speech presented at the top of their website.
Organizations:
In Australia, MINDD (Metabolic, Immunologic, Neurologic, Digestive, Disorders) is a non profit health promotion trust. This organization recommends finding a practitioner who identifies and treats causative factors for childrens disorders. They are concerned about the rise in numbers of children with autism, ADHD, asthma, depression ,etc and feel this is directly related to food, pollution, medications and stress. They offer information and access to practitioners on their website.
In Britain, Food and Behavior Research (FAB) provides information and access to resources which inform parents and health professionals of available information related to nutrition and mental health. FAB presents information through an excellent website and through supporting conferences.
Books:
The Autism Revolution is an important book written by a very innovative thinker, Dr. Martha Herbert, a researcher at Harvard Medical School, wrote the book from her experiences working with the parents of autistic children. They have seen great improvements using simple changes in their environment including improving their nutrition, reducing their stress, reducing their exposures to toxins and more. This is a link to 10 Tips Dr. Herbert has summarized her message into.
Other supports:
Parents are finding success with other options. One such parent, Sandra Breakespeare, in Cornwall, England has developed the Chy Sawel Project whose website makes available information concerning options, she and others, have found helpful in treating mental illness. These options include diet, supplementation and talk therapies. Sandra's son has been under care for schizophrenia which led her to this work.
Epidemic answers is an online resource developed by Beth Lambert. It is a resource for parents, practitioners and health coaches.
